Bourne Finishes Third In The Pole Vault At Big 12 Championships

May 18, 2003 | Track and Field

AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore Lindsey Bourne equalled a season best in the pole vault of 12-6 and, in the process, earned a third place tie during action Sunday of the seventh annual Big 12 Track and Field Outdoor Championships. Action continues Monday at Mike Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

Bourne passed on the first height, then cleared her first attempt on the next three heights. She missed three attempts at 12-10 and tied with Yvonne Calzonetti of Kansas for third place. OU junior Mary Waytula tied for seventh at 12-0 and Leslie Dunlap tied for ninth after clearing 12-0. Redshirt junior Jennifer Plank failed to clear the opening height.

The Sooner performance in the pole vault produced seven points and has the OU women eighth after two days of action.

Senior Kyle Bookout finished fourth in the discus with a 184-11 while younger brother, Kevin Bookout, finished eighth with a 171-10. Junior Robert Smith finished fifth in the long jump with a 23-4.5 to give OU a total of 10 points and a tie for eighth place in the team standings.

The Sooner women advanced five athletes to six finals as LaVerne Jones qualified in both the 100 and the 200. The Sooner men advanced four athletes to five finals. DaBryan Blanton posted the best qualifying time in the 200 and had the third best time in the 100 to lead OU's efforts.

Other qualifiers for OU include Aisha Stringer, who won her heat in the 800; Nicola Maye, who had the third best time in the 800; Tiffany Davis, who advanced in the 100 hurdles; Jimyria Hicks, who qualified in the 100; Aldwyn Sappleton, who advanced in the 800 and Joe McNair, who qualified in the 1500.

OU added four first-time regional qualifiers tonight as Maye (800), Kevin Bookout (discus), Dwayne Duhaney (400) and Hicks (100) met qualifying standards for the first time this season in those events.

Several other Sooners who had already posted qualifying marks improved those times tonight. Those who improved their season bests included Jones in the 100 and 200; Davis in the 100 hurdles; Blanton in the 200 and Sappleton in the 800.

The meet concludes on Monday with four relay, 18 running and seven field event finals.
