NORMAN, Okla. - No. 3 Oklahoma suffered a 2-1 upset by Iowa State at the OU Softball Complex in Norman on Saturday afternoon.
The Sooners dropped to 31-6 overall and 7-3 in the Big 12. ISU improved to 14-19 and moved to 2-4 in conference play.
The Cyclones took advantage of the Sooner defense to post two runs early in the game while OU's lethargic bats came up empty at the plate for much of the game.
In the first inning, ISU's Adi Blackmon singled to reach first, then moved to second when OU pitcher Dana Askins walked Lindsey Herrin. Blackmon stole third to put the Cyclones in scoring position.
Kelly Wardein then grounded to Tiffany Weight for the apparent third out but Weight mishandled the ball and Blackmon darted home for the unearned run. Askins fanned the final batter to close out the frame.
OU's Heather Scaglione (1-for-2) hit her fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the second to even the score, 1-1. Scaglione, fresh off a game-winning double against Oklahoma State in the Bedlam game Wednesday night, arced the ball over the left field wall and smacked the scoreboard.
Iowa State answered in the top of the third. Katie Ruby took first after absorbing a ball at home plate and Lindsey Herrin reached on an error by OU shortstop Kelli Braitsch. Molly McNertney then doubled to drive in Ruby and the Cyclones had the winning score, 2-1.
Sooner head coach Patty Gasso replaced Askins on the mound with lefty Kami Keiter but Oklahoma was unable to rally. Askins fell to 6-4 with the loss. She gave up four hits, two walks and one earned run in 3.1 innings while fanning three batters. Keiter struck out four in her 3.2 innings of work without issuing a walk and allowed just one hit.
ISU's Kristen Karanzias improved to 3-6 with the victory. Karanzias gave up just two hits and one run while striking out four batters. She went a complete seven innings without a walk.
Oklahoma returns to the field on Sunday to complete the series with Iowa State. First pitch is scheduled for Noon at the OU Softball Complex.
