No. 2 seed Oklahoma State registered the first mercy rule game of the 2003 Big 12 Tournament with an 8-0 win against No. 10 seed Baylor.
OSU scored two runs in the bottom of the first when second baseman Calli Behmer doubled to center and left fielder Megan Carey hit her first of two home runs over the left field fence off of Baylor starter Katie Decker. The Cowgirls roughed up Decker with four runs in the fifth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate to make the score 6-0.
Centerfielder Jade Lindly and shortstop Stephanie Nicholson opened the fifth with back-to-back doubles as OSU combined for four hits and left the bases loaded in the frame. Carey ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run down the left field line. Carey's four RBI for the game tied for the third most in the eight-year history of the tournament.
Big 12 Player of the Year Lauren Bay picked up the win by allowing only three hits with eight strikeouts to improve to 23-7 on the season.
OSU will play Friday night against the winner of the Missouri-Nebraska game. Baylor will play at 3 p.m. Friday against the Missouri-Nebraska loser.
Oklahoma State Coach Margaret Rebenar
On OSU's offense:
"They were really zoned in tonight and that was really nice to see. We had a relaxed warmup to the point where they hit the ball well in pregame. Hitting is a funny deal, sometimes you just don't know who's going to show up. This group showed up tonight."
On Baylor being the play-in game winner:
"Those play-in games are tough. The good thing is our conference takes all 10 teams so everybody at least has a chance that first round. It's tough on somebody but at least they get to come to the tournament. Not everybody is like that."
Baylor Head Coach Glenn Moore
"We won the first to get in the tournament and we're happy with that. We ran into a team that was better than us right now. Lauren Bay is an unbelievable pitcher and you can't give up many runs to be in the ball game. All our kids competed very well. She's (Bay) a good pitcher. Give them credit. You have to catch them when they're not having a great day and we've got to be on top of our game. That's obviously not what happened but I thought our kids competed real hard and I was pleased with that."
