Texas Tech shortstop Kristi Robles (1-for-3) belted a two-run triple down the rightfield line in the second inning to open the scoring for the Red Raiders and Tech went on to oust Kansas, 5-1, in the play-in round of the 2003 Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Tournament at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City Thursday afternoon. Robles crossed home plate for Tech's third run of the second inning on a fielder's choice.

The Red Raiders added two runs in the third inning off a double by Joachims and Tech assumed a 5-0 lead. Kansas centerfielder Mel Wallach scored a run on a throwing error by Tech's Shayne Gipson in the seventh inning but it was too little, too late for the Jayhawks.

Tech's Amie Stines pitched a complete-game five-hitter to improve to 9-18 on the season. Kara Pierce took the loss for Kansas and fell to 16-13. Pierce surrendered all five runs (all earned) in 2.2 innings of work before being relieved by Kirsten Milhoan.

This marks the seventh straight year the tournament's No. 8 seed has ousted the No. 9 seed in the play-in round. Texas Tech upped its season mark to 22-39 while Kansas dropped to 26-22.

Texas Tech Head Coach Bobby Reeves
Overall thoughts of the game:

"A good performance out of everyone. We came out and swung the bats the first inning which was important. (Kristi) Robles' triple with two people on was huge. She hit the ball well all night. She hit the ball hard every time she came up. We played great defense. You have to hit on all three cylinders to win games in this tournament -- you've got to have offense, defense and pitching. Tonight it all came together so I was very pleased."

On Texas Tech Pitcher Amie Stines:
"(Amie) Stines got herself in a bind a couple times but got out of it and made some good pitches. Overall, it was a good performance."

Kansas Head Coach Tracy Bunge
On the loss:

"This game was pretty typical of the last half of our season. This year was so frustrating because it started out with so much promise. For us to play like we have during the last five or six weeks is a product of our youth and a lack of pitching depth due to a some injuries."

Wrapping up the season:
"We haven't gotten much offense, we've been erratic defensively and our pitching has been a little up and down over the last six weeks. It is a frustrating way to end the season, but the exciting part for our program is that there are so many young faces back next season. We will be back and much better than ever next season because of that experience."
