Cowgirls Drop OU Softball, 4-0

STILLWATER, Okla. - There was no Sooner Magic in Stillwater for the OU softball team Thursday night. No. 15 Oklahoma State dealt No. 5 Oklahoma a 4-0 setback in front of a record crowd at Cowgirl Stadium. OSU's victory snapped a 14-game win streak for the Sooners in the series dating back to 1998.

In the first Bedlam matchup of the season on April 2 in Norman, sophomore catcher Heather Scaglione belted a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to propel OU past the Cowgirls, 2-1.

There was no comeback this time around.

The Sooners (36-9, 10-6 Big 12) were held without a run for just the fourth time this season. Despite going toe-to-toe with OSU's ace Lauren Bay for much of the game, Sooner pitcher Kami Keiter dropped to 25-5 with the loss. Keiter fanned nine batters before being relieved by freshman Dana Askins with one out to go in the sixth inning. Bay struck out the final three OU batters in the seventh to finish with 10 K's for the game.

Keiter gave up three earned runs and walked three batters in the loss.

With one player on and facing two outs, designated player Jennifer Stump (1-for-3) managed the Sooners' only hit of the game in the second inning. But Bay fanned Kami Keiter and the Cowgirls escaped with the shutout intact.

OU left five runners on base while Oklahoma State stranded nine. OSU finished with eight hits in the game.

With the permanent seats and temporary bleachers full 45 minutes prior to the first pitch, fans lined the outfield wall to catch a glimpse of the action. The game was played live on statewide TV and an announced crowd of 1,366 fans packed Cowgirl Stadium for the Bedlam series finale. The attendence broke the old record of 1,289 set during the Bedlam game last season.

OSU improved to 35-9 overall and 13-3 in the Big 12. The Cowgirls host Texas this weekend in a series that will decide the Big 12 regular season champion.

Oklahoma returns to Norman to host the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday and Sunday at the OU Softball Complex with both games scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The Sooners remain in Norman to host Tulsa in the 2003 regular season finale on Monday night, April 28, at 7 p.m.
