Sooner T&F Wins Eight Events At Michael Johnson Classic

WACO, Texas - Sooner track and field athletes had one of their best days of the year at Saturday's Michael Johnson Classic, winning eight events and recording 13 NCAA regional qualifying marks.

The winners included Tiffany Davis in the 100-meter hurdles, Kyle Bookout in the discus, Kevin Bookout in the shot put, Kelsey Moore in the high jump, Leslie Dunlap in the pole vault, Austin Landreth in the men's pole vault, Aisha Stringer in the women's invitational 800 and Aldwyn Sappleton in the men's invitational 800-meter run.

First-time regional qualifiers included Landreth in the men's pole vault, Renea' Burns in the javelin, Lindsey Bourne in the women's pole vault, DaBryan Blanton in the 200 and Sappleton in the men's 800. Blanton had already qualified in the 100 and Sappleton had met the standard in the 400.

It was a day that also produced a total of 23 OU collegiate career bests. Those included Kyle Bookout, 190-9, discus; Kevin Bookout, 58-3.75, shot put, and 156-6, discus; Trevor Gillum, 16:15.17, 5000 meter; Blanton, 20.76, 200; Bourne, 12-6, pole vault; Alaina Dearman, 4:42.18, 1500; Moore, 5-5.25, high jump; Burns, 140-3, javelin; Ashley Freeman, 12.21, 100; Amanda Wedel, 13.22, 100, and 66.36, 400; Natasha Franklin, 25.13, 200; Briana Hope, 26.93, 200; Nicola Maye, 4:37.78, 1500; Lucretia Rimmer, 18-6, long jump; Jessica Pekah, discus, 136-10; Cory Crosby, 22.64, 200, and 22-8.5, long jump; Dwayne Duhaney, 48.54, 400; David Coombs, 49.37, 400; and Robert Smith, 46-10, triple jump, and Myria Houlihan, high jump, 5-3.25.

It also was a day that several Sooners made their mark on school career performance lists. For Kyle Bookout, his effort of 190-9 is the second best in OU history. Younger brother Kevin's effort in the shot put, 58-3.75, ranks as the fifth best mark in school history. Bourne's mark in the pole vault (12-6) is the second best in school history and Burns' mark in the javelin (140-3) is the fifth best in school history. Pekah moved onto the all-time best list in the discus with a 136-10. Blanton got on the all-time best list in the 200 with his time, ranking ninth.

The Sooners will send athletes to two different meets next weekend. Action for OU will open Thursday at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia and the Drake Relays in Des Moines.
