LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 5 Oklahoma ripped off 11 hits in five innings to torch Texas Tech, 10-0, in Lubbock on Saturday afternoon. The Sooners gave up just one hit in the game deep in the bottom of the fifth frame with Tech already facing two outs.
Oklahoma (35-8, 10-5 Big 12) served notice in the first inning that it had come to play. On the first pitch of the game, freshman rightfielder Kristin Vesely (1-for-2) hit a seeing eye single that bounced around the Tech infielders into the outfield grass. Erin Evans (2-for-3) then dashed to second on an error by Tech's Andrea Joachims as Vesely reached third.
Leah Gulla (1-for-2) brought both runners home with her 10th double of the season to give the Sooners a 2-0 lead. Gulla advanced to third when Christina Enea flied out to right field and scored OU's third run when Tech centerfielder Esmerelda Perez threw wildly towards home plate after fielding a fly by Heather Scaglione.
Oklahoma added two runs in the third stanza. Erin Evans singled to reach first and swiped second for her 12th stolen base of the season (12-of-16). Texas Tech pitcher Amie Stines walked Leah Gulla, who was replaced at first by pinch runner Katie Overton. Christina Enea (1-for-3) then singled to RBI Evans and advance Overton to third.
Heather Scaglione reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second as Tech ran down Overton between third and home. Christina Enea scored on a passed ball by Tech catcher Lisa Lawler to give OU the 5-0 advantage.
In the top of the fourth, Erin Evans hit a one-run single to drive in Jennifer Stump and the Sooners extended their lead to 6-0.
Oklahoma added an exclamation point to its offensive explosion with a grand slam in the fifth, and final, inning. Christina Enea reached on an error by Tech's shortstop Kristi Robles. Heather Scaglione walked to first and a single by Kelli Braitsch (1-for-3) loaded the bases for OU. Freshman pitcher Dana Askins then belted her first career home run -- a grand slam -- over the left field wall to give Oklahoma the 10-0 final.
Kami Keiter (24-4) picked up her 24th win of the season in three innings of work against Texas Tech. Keiter shut down the Red Raiders for no hits and no walks with two strikeouts. Dana Askins notched one inning of work without allowing a hit or issuing a walk and Nicole Denes wrapped up the game in the fifth giving up one hit.
The Texas Tech pitching staff was unable to fan a single Sooner batter over the five innings. Starter Amie Stines dropped to 5-17 with the loss. Stines allowed eight hits and four earned runs without a strikeout and one walk. Kristina Blair took over in the final inning and gave up three earned runs on three hits with one walk.
Oklahoma now returns to Norman hoping to finish its season in the Sooner State. OU next plays at Tulsa on Tuesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. The Sooners then wrap up the Bedlam series with the return game in Stillwater on Thursday, April 24, at 7 p.m. and host Texas A&M in their final Big 12 matchup on April 26 and 27.
