The Last Time Out
It was a winning day for the Bookout brothers of the University of Oklahoma track and field team at the 34th annual John Jacobs Invitational last Saturday at Jacobs Field.
Kevin Bookout won the shot put with an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 57-9 and older brother Kyle Bookout won the discus with an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 178-4. The mark by Kyle was his fifth regional qualifying mark in as many meets and the winning effort by Kevin was two inches better than his winning mark at the Texas Relays. Kevin also finished second in the discus with a 153-8.
The competition at the John Jacobs marked the first time for the Bookouts to compete against each other in a track and field meet.
In all, the Sooners posted 10 NCAA regional qualifying marks including LaVerne Jones in the 200-meter dash, Tiffany Davis in the 100-meter hurdles, Leslie Dunlap and Mary Waytula, in the women's pole vault, Aldwyn Sappleton in the 400-meter dash and Robin Hanna and Michael Westlund in the men's pole vault. The mark of 12-0.50 by Waytula in the women's pole vault was a career best for the junior.
OU event winners included Jones in the 200, Davis in the 100 hurdles, Nicola Maye in the 1500-meter run, Megan Crystal in the shot put, Jessica Pekah in the discus, Sappleton in the 400 and the men's 1600-meter relay, made up of Dwayne Duhaney, Josh Scott, Andrew Crabbe and Cory Cosby.
