NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma will send a pair of competitors to this week's Mt. Sac Relays Multi-Events competition instead of traveling to the Kansas Relays, OU co-head coach Jill Lancaster announced today.
Lancaster, assistant coach Tom Williams and combined event competitors Dan Strong and Chaundra Allard will depart for California on Tuesday morning. Competition in the heptathlon starts at 9:30 a.m. (PT) on Wednesday and will conclude, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Competition in the decathlon starts at 10 a.m. (PT) on Wednesday and concludes on Thursday, beginning at 10 a.m.
"We have so few opportunities to compete in the combined events because of the recovery time needed between competitions," Lancaster explained. "The weather at Texas A&M, our first competition of the season, was not as good as it has been and sometimes the weather at KU presents challenges. We entered our two competitors at Mt. Sac and when their entries were accepted, we made the decision to make the switch.
"This will give our student-athletes one more opportunity to go through a combined event competition prior to the Big 12 Championships next month in Austin," Lancaster added.
Strong finished finished 10th in the bronze division of the men's decathlon at the College Station Combined in mid March. He scored 5,575 points in his first combined competition of the 2003 outdoor season, despite not scoring any points in the pole vault, one of of his best events. Allard finished 10th in the gold division of the heptathlon with 4,468 points.
The rest of the Sooners will head to Waco, Texas, and the Michael Johnson/SBC Invitational this weekend.
