No. 6 Sooners Extend Win Streak To 11 At OU/Worth Invitational

Norman, Okla. - In the second day of competition at the OU/Worth Invitational, Oklahoma improved to 18-3 with a 2-0 shutout of Wisconsin and a 6-3 win over Northwestern State on Saturday in Norman. The No. 6 Sooners extended their win streak to 11 games.

The Sooners scored the only runs in the top of the second inning against Wisconsin. UW dropped to 8-9 with the loss.

Senior catcher Heather Scaglione (1-for-3) doubled to begin the inning. Scaglione had OU's lone hit, a home run, against the Badgers in Oklahoma's 1-0 win on Friday.

Designated player Jennifer Stump (1-for-3) then singled to left field to plate Scaglione. Senior second baseman Tiffany Weight, pinch running for Stump, advanced to second on an error by the UW catcher. An April Valdez single advanced Weight to third and she scored on a single by freshman Kristin Vesely (1-for-3) to put Oklahoma up, 2-0.

Kami Keiter, in a complete game for the Sooners, allowed three hits while walking one and throwing four strikeouts. Keiter upped her season record to 12-1.

Oklahoma stranded four runners while Wisconsin left five on base.

In the Sooners' second game, Northwestern State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning but OU put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth and added two more in the fifth to record their 11th straight win, 6-3.

OU pitcher Nicole Denes was replaced in the second inning by Dana Askins. Denes allowed one hit, three runs while walking three Demon batters. Askins recorded the win to improve to 3-2. Askins allowed three runs and walked three while striking out five NSU batters.

Behind 3-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, senior centerfielder Erin Evans (1-for-4) doubled to left field to get things going for the Sooners. Senior shortstop Kelli Braitsch (2-for-4) singled to RBI Evans for OU's initial score.

Braitsch advanced to second on a wild pitch and sophomore Christina Enea hit her second home run to even the score at 3-3.

Heather Scaglione (2-for-3) singled and Jennifer Stump reached on an error by the NSU second baseman. Stump and Nikki Holt, pinch running for Scaglione, advanced on a grounder by April Valdez. Tiffany Weight (2-for-3) singled to plate Holt and gave the Sooners their first lead of the game at 4-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, Leah Gulla belted her fifth homer of the season to score Erin Evans and OU held on to win, 6-3.

OU moved to 18-3 with the win and extended its win streak to 11 games. OU returns to the field for a doubleheader against St. Gregory's on Tuesday, March 11 at 4 and 6 p.m. Fans will be admitted to both game free of charge.
