Norman, Okla. - The No. 6 Sooners posted wins in both of their games on Friday in the opening day of action at the OU/Worth Invitational in Norman. Oklahoma beat Northwestern State, 5-3, and topped Wisconsin, 1-0, to improve to 16-3 on the season.
In the early game, senior shortstop Kelli Braitsch (1-for-4) blasted a three-run homer in the first inning to give Oklahoma a 3-0 lead. Braitsch's roundtripper plated senior Erin Evans and freshman Kristin Vesely.
In the top of the third, senior Leah Gulla's single (1-for-4) plated Erin Evans for her second run of the game and OU led, 4-0.
Northwestern State put two runs on the board in the bottom of the third with a Lindsay Leftwich single that plated Lindsey Danzy and Sarina Noack.
Oklahoma went up 5-2 in the top of the sixth when designated player Jennifer Stump (1-for-3) hit a one-run single that scored pinch runner Lori Shimasaki.
The Demons added a run in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't overtake the Sooners and OU took the win, 5-3.
Freshman hurler Nicole Denes improved to 3-0 with the win. Denes pitched 5.0 innings allowing five hits and two runs while walking three and striking out four batters. Dana Askins pitched for 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run while walking one and throwing one strikeout.
Kami Keiter took over to close out the final two batters.
In the evening game, OU was held to just one hit but the Sooners made it count -- a home run by sophomore catcher Heather Scaglione in the bottom of the fifth to give Oklahoma the tight, 1-0 win.
Wisconsin pitcher Andrea Kirchberg bedeviled the Sooners through five innings before the Scaglione roundtripper. Kirchberg, in a complete game for the Badgers, walked two Sooners and struck out 10 in the one-hitter.
OU pitcher Kami Keiter improved to 11-1, allowing just three hits while walking one and striking out five Wisconsin bats.
