LAWRENCE, Kan. - Perhaps the OU softball coaching staff should add a forecaster from the school's esteemed meteorologist department to the travel squad.
No. 4 Oklahoma (26-4) scored three unanswered runs to knock off No. 24 Kansas, 3-1, at Jayhawk Field in Lawrence on a wet Saturday afternoon. The game was interrupted by rain but the teams were able to complete the contest after a one hour delay.
Weather has played havoc with the Sooners' schedule this season with 12 games cancelled or postponed.
Undaunted by Mother Nature, OU upped its Big 12 record to 2-1 with the win. The Sooners split with No. 5 Nebraska in Lincoln on Thursday in their Big 12 opener. Kansas fell to 18-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
KU took an early 1-0 lead on a one-run double by Jessica Moppin that plated Lindsey Weinstein in the first.
The Sooners wouldn't allow Kansas to keep the lead very long.
In the top of the third with April Valdez on base, OU senior centerfielder Erin Evans (2-for-3) belted her third home run of the season to give Oklahoma a 2-1 lead.
The Sooners added an insurance run in the fourth to go up 3-1. Sophomore Christina Enea advanced to third on a single by Jennifer Stump and darted home on a throwing error by KU's shortstop, Destiny Frankenstein.
OU ace Kami Keiter improved to 16-1 on the season. Keiter gave up four hits but just one run while walking two and fanning five KU batters. Kara Pierce took the loss for the Jayhawks and dropped to 11-5 on the season. Pierce allowed eight hits and three runs without issuing a walk and striking out three.
The Sooners left five runners on base while KU stranded seven.
OU and Kansas complete their series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Sooners will then host Missouri in Norman on Wednesday, March 26 at the OU Softball Complex in their Big 12 home opener. The doubleheader begins at 5 p.m.
