Norman, Okla. - The No. 6 Sooner softball team stretched their win streak to 13 games with a doubleheader sweep of St. Gregory's at the OU Softball Complex on Tuesday evening.
Oklahoma (20-3) beat the Cavaliers, 7-4, in the opening game of the twinbill and blanked SGU, 5-0, in the nightcap.
OU jumped out to a lead in the first inning of both games.
Senior Leah Gulla (1-for-4) singled to centerfield to plate Erin Evans for the first score in the opening game. St. Gregory's put three runs on the board in the top of the second when Emily Gastineau belted a two-run homer.
OU answered in its next opportunty at the plate to even the score, 3-3. After Jennifer Stump walked, April Valdez (2-for-3) sent her first home run of the season over the left field wall.
The Sooners siezed the lead for good in the third. Sophomore Christina Enea (2-for-3) singled to plate Kelli Braitsch and Kristin Vesely. On the next play, sophomore catcher Heather Scaglione (2-for-3) doubled to RBI Enea and OU was up, 6-3.
Both teams added a run in the fifth stanza. Jolene Martin homered for the Cavaliers while OU's Jennifer Stump (1-for-1) singled to plate pinch runner Lori Shimasaki and OU won, 7-4.
Freshman Nicole Denes pitched a complete game on the mound for the Sooners to move to 4-0 on the season. The Coppell, Texas, native gave up seven runs and four hits while walking four and retiring five SGU bats.
In the nightcap, OU again got off to a hot start with two runs in the first.
A Leah Gulla (2-for-2) single advanced Kristin Vesely to third and she dashed home on the throw. Heather Scaglione singled to RBI Kelli Braitsch and Oklahoma took had a quick 2-0 lead.
OU added a run in the third when Gulla blasted a ball over the left field wall. In the sixth, Christina Enea (1-for-3) tripled to plate junior Katie Overton. Enea ran home on the next play on a Heather Scaglione single to center field and OU took the game, 5-0.
Freshman Dana Askins improved to 4-2 with the shutout. The Moore, Okla., native allowed four hits, walked one and struck out five Cavaliers in the win.
Oklahoma travels to Fullerton, Calif., tomorrow in preparation for the Kia Classic. The Sooners will meet Arizona State for the fourth time this season at 9 a.m. (PT) on Thursday morning. OU is scheduled to play UNLV at 11 a.m., then Cal State Northridge at 11 a.m. on Friday.
Once pool play is complete, the 16 participating teams will be seeded and single-elimination bracket play will begin Friday evening.
