Bookout Returns To Competition With Regional Qualifying Mark

DENTON, Texas -- After sitting out for a full year while recovering from a shoulder injury, senior Kyle Bookout returned to competition with an NCAA Midwest Regional qualifying mark in the discus Friday at the North Texas Invitational.
Bookout finished second in the discus with a 171-0. That mark beat the qualifying standard for the NCAA Midwest Regional to be held May 30-31 in Lincoln, Neb. This marks the first year for the regional qualifying format for outdoor track and field. Qualifiers for the NCAA Championships, scheduled June 11-14 in Sacramento, Calif., will come from regional action.
Senior Megan Crystal opened her 2003 outdoor season with a first place finish in the shot put and a fourth place finish in the discus. She threw 41-7 to win the shot and recorded a 127-1 in the discus. Freshman Katie Blue finished third in the shot with a 40-0 and was sixth in the discus with a 122-0.
Renea' Burns opened her Sooner career with a second place finish in the javelin, recording a throw of 129-2. That mark ranks seventh all-time on the OU career list. Chaundra Allard was fourth in the javelin with a 101-5.
Sophomore Dan Strong finished ninth in the discus with a 105-5 and was fifth in the javelin with a 127-3. Both marks for Strong are collegiate career bests.
Strong and Allard will enter their first combined competition of the outdoor season Thursday at Texas A&M. A number of other Sooners will also head to College Station for the Texas A&M Relays on Saturday.
