Gainesville, Fla. - Oklahoma allowed five runs by South Florida in the first inning and was unable to overcome the deficit as a spirited comeback fell just short, 5-4. The Sooners dropped their first game of the season at the GRU Tournament in Gainesville, Fla., to move to 3-1.

OU hurler Dana Askins (0-1) pitched five innings and took the loss. Although the freshman gave up four runs in the first inning, Askins regrouped to shut down the Bulls for the remainder of the game. Freshman Nicole Denes appeared on the mound for OU for two innings.

Oklahoma broke its scoring drought in the bottom of the third when sophomore first baseman Christina Enea (2-for-3) singled to right field to plate freshman Kristin Vesely.

The Sooners scored again in the fifth when senior Erin Evans (1-for-3) blasted a home run over the right field wall.

Down 5-2, Oklahoma almost overtook the Bulls in the seventh. Kami Keiter, pinch hitting for Tiffany Weight, singled with her first swing in the inning to center field. Weight would return to the field to run for Keiter.

The next batter, Kristin Vesely, reached on an error by the USF center fielder to advance to third and plate Weight. After Erin Evans grounded out to the shortstop, Kelli Braitsch grounded out to second but allowed Vesely to run in. OU trailed by a score of just 5-4 with two outs.

Christina Enea doubled to center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. However, the Sooners were unable to complete the comeback as Leah Gulla fouled out to left field to end the game.

Defensively, OU's Tiffany Weight, Heather Scaglione and Christina Enea each had five putouts. The Sooners left seven on base while South Florida stranded eight runners.

Oklahoma's final game of the GRU Tournament against UIC was canceled due to inclement weather in the Gainesville area. OU returns to Norman for their home opener by hosting the OU/Nike Classic Feb. 14-16.
