No. 8 Softball Wins Season Opener, 5-1

Gainesville, Fla. - The No. 8 Oklahoma softball team successfully opened the 2003 season with a 5-1 win over lllinois-Chicago at the Florida GRU Classic in Gainesville, Fla., Friday morning.

The Sooners have won all nine season openers under head coach Patty Gasso and 12 straight dating back to 1991.

Freshman Kristin Vesely (Phoenix, Ariz.) had the distinction of leading off and scoring the first run of the 2003 season for Oklahoma. Sophomore Christina Enea (Woodland Hills, Calif.) drove in Vesely and senior Erin Evans (Lawton, Okla.) with her single in the first inning to put OU up, 2-0.

OU allowed a run by UIC in the bottom of the first but doused the Flames the rest of the way.

Senior catcher Heather Scaglione (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore hurler Kami Keiter (Arvada, Colo.) scored in the second and senior shortstop Kelli Braitsch blasted the first home run of the season in the third to widen the Sooners lead to 5-1.

The 5-1 score would hold through the end of the game as the Sooners improved to 3-1 all-time against UIC.

Kami Keiter pitched the first five innings for the Sooners before being replaced by freshman Dana Askins in the bottom of the sixth. Keiter allowed two hits, one run, two walks while striking out four batters. Askins recorded one strikeout in her two innings without giving up a hit.

OU returns to the field at 6:30 p.m. (5:30 p.m. CT) Friday night to face South Florida. The Sooners battle tournament host Florida at 1:30 p.m. (12:30 p.m. CT) on Saturday.
