Dunlap Finishes Third In The Pole Vault In Big 12 Indoor

LINCOLN, Neb. - Junior Leslie Dunlap cleared 12-4 to finish third in the pole vault during first day action at the seventh annual Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championship. Dunlap was the defending champion in the event.

The Sooner women were 10th after the first day of events while the OU men were tied for ninth.

The bulk of OU's points came in the women's pole vault. In addition to Dunlap's third place showing, the Sooners got points from Mary Waytula, Devon Fox and Lindsey Bourne, who tied for eighth. The women also finished seventh in the distance medley relay.

The Sooner men got their points from a fourth place finish in the distance medley relay. The Sooners posted a time of 9:52.25, one of the best times in more than a decade for the OU men in this event. Joe McNair, Dwayne Duhaney, Aldwyn Sappleton and Jimmy Buchanan combined for the finish.

In prelim action for OU, LaVerne Jones led the way for the women, posting NCAA provisional qualifying times to advance in the 60 and the 200. She had the second fastest qualifying time in the 60 and had the fourth best time in the 200. Also advancing to Saturday's finals were Tiffany Davis, who had a NCAA provisional qualfying time in the 60-meter hurdles; Jimyria Hicks in the 60 dash; Aisha Stringer in the 800 and Alaina Dearman in the 1000-meter run with a career best time of 2:54.61.

Sooner men who advanced to Saturday's finals included DaBryan Blanton, who posted a career best and NCAA provisional mark in the 60; L'eron George, who advanced in the 60 and the 200; McNair in the mile and Aldwyn Sappleton in the 800.

A total of 12 season bests were posted today by the Sooner women while the OU men had two season bests. Of those 14 season bests, four were career best marks. Those included Jones in the 60 and 200; Hicks in the 60; Terrika Warren in the 400; Michelle Thomas in the 600 and Dearman in the 1000.

Action resumes on Saturday with the final three events of the men's heptathlon starting at 10 a.m. Field event finals begin at 1:30 p.m. and running finals start at 3 p.m.
