NORMAN, Okla. - The OU men's and women's track and field teams left Norman Wednesday morning, heading north to Lincoln, Neb., for the seventh annual Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships. Action begins at 10 a.m. Friday when the combined event competitors open the meet. A complete schedule with OU's entries by event is included in this release.
In the Field
All 12 teams in the conference will be sending teams to the indoor championship. Nebraska is hosting the meet for the third consecutive year and the home track has been good for the Huskers. The NU men will be going for the fourth consecutive title while the Nebraska women will be trying for a third title in the last four years. Texas edged Nebraska by four points for the title in 2002.
Last Year At The Big 12 Indoor
The Sooners crowned two champions. Aldwyn Sappleton won the 600-yard title and Leslie Dunlap won the pole vault title. It was the first indoor title for each and Dunlap's second Big 12 win. She had previously won the 2001 Big 12 Outdoor crown.
The Sooner men finished ninth at the conference meet last February while the OU women were 12th.
The Last Time Out
Tiffany Davis ran a season best of 8.41 to finish second in the 60-meter hurdles at the Sooner Indoor Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Mosier Indoor Facility. The time is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark for Davis and solidified her ranking in the Big 12. She entered the day tied for fifth and now has fifth place by herself.
Davis' mark was one of six provisionals posted in the final home indoor meet of the season for OU. It also was the final meet before most conference championship meets across the country.
For the Sooner men, Dwayne Duhaney won the 600-yard run with a 1:11.88. Brontez Steele finished third in the event.
Other top performances for the Sooners included a second place finish by Lameisa Thomas in the 600-yard run with a season best time of 1:25.49; a fourth place finish in the 600 by Michelle Thomas, also in a season best time; fourth, fifth and sixth place finishes by Kelsey Moore, Veronica Clayborne and Myria Houlihan in the high jump with season bests by Moore and Clayborne; a season best of 12-8.25 in the pole vault for a second place finish by Leslie Dunlap; a fourth place finish in the pole vault for Lindsey Bourne; a second place finish in the triple jump by Lucretia Rimmer; a third place finish by Megan Crystal in the shot put; a fourth place finish in the 400 in a season best 57.44 by Terrika Warren; a fifth place finish in the 800 in a season best by Kim Thomas; fourth and sixth place finishes by DaBryan Blanton and L'eron George in the 60-meter dash; fourth and fifth place finishes in the 200 with season bests by Andrew Crabbe and Malik Swinton; a fourth place finish in the mile by Jimmy Buchanan with a season best 4:20.80; and a sixth place finish in the pole vault by Robin Hanna.
In all, Sooner student-athletes posted 21 season bests in the final home meet of the 2003 indoor season.
National Rankings
A total of five Sooner student-athletes have posted NCAA provisional marks for the 2003 NCAA Indoor Championship. Junior LaVerne Jones has provisional marks in two events, the 60 and the 200. As of the latest ranking list (Feb. 24), she is 14th in the 60 and 22nd in the 200.
Other Sooners who have provisional marks and their ranking include Jason Stanley, 18th in the 60-meter hurdles; Aldwyn Sappleton, 20th in the 800-meter run; Tiffany Davis, 28th in the 60-meter hurdles and Aisha Stringer, 29th in the 800-meter run. The final day to post a mark for the 2003 meet is Saturday, March 8.
