Columbus, Ga. - Oklahoma returned to the field Saturday morning at the NFCA Classic and defeated Villanova, 3-1, in a game delayed a day by rain. OU and the Wildcats played to a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning yesterday before the weather intervened.
OU had one out and Heather Scaglione on third base when the game was delayed on Friday. This morning, the very first throw by Villanova to Kami Keiter was ruled an illegal pitch and plated Scaglione to give the Sooners a 2-1 lead.
Freshman Nicole Denes then doubled and was replaced by pinch runner Nikki Holt on second base. Mariee Mena hit another double to RBI Holt and put Oklahoma up for good, 3-1.
Villanova could not answer in the top of the seventh and the Sooners moved to 6-2 with the win.
Sophomore lefty Kami Keiter secured the win for OU to move to 6-1. Keiter pitched a complete game, allowing one run on five hits and struck out eight Wildcat batters.
The Sooners stranded six runners while Villanova stranded five.
OU will next play CS-Fullerton at 7 p.m. (6 p.m. CT). In an abbreviated tournament, Oklahoma will wrap up its competition in Columbus, Ga., with a game against LSU on Sunday at 11 a.m. (10 a.m. CT).
