GAINESVILLE, Fla. - OU junior Aldwyn Sappleton turned it on in the final 200 meters to move from last to third in the 800-meter run at the Gator Invitational Sunday. Sappleton finished with a time of 1:50.92 in his first race at that distance this season.
"I learned a lot about Aldwyn with this race," said Sooner assistant coach Rodney Rothoff who took Sappleton to Gainesville. "He has an incredible will and he is so strong at the end. We will take what happened in the race and use it as Aldwyn continues to learn how to run in these events against the top competitors. It was an incredibly strong field and Aldwyn more than held his own, especially over the last 200 meters. It will be a great experience to build from as he prepares for big races still to come this season."
Sappleton and many of his Sooner teammates will head to Ames, Iowa, for the Iowa State Invitational Friday and Saturday. The Sooner pole vaulters and senior Megan Crystal in the shot put will head to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Tyson Invitational on Friday.
