Softball Takes Fall Festival Championship

NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma softball team claimed the championship of the OU Fall Festival with a pair of wins Sunday afternoon. OU defeated Eastern Oklahoma State, 2-1, and St. Gregory's, 6-0, to close out a perfect weekend. OU is 10-0 on the fall with one game remaining.

After run-ruling its two Friday opponents, the OU offense took some time to get rolling on Sunday. Sophomore Nicole Denes went 6.1 innings in the first game, allowing no earned runs before handing the ball off to reliever Kami Keiter with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. Eastern's Stacy Kiker grounded out to shortstop but brought in a run, making the score 2-1. Keiter struck out the final batter of the inning and recorded the save.

Denes struck out six giving up four hits and one unearned run. The victory gave Denes two wins on the weekend. Denes no-hit Connors State on Friday.

OU 's offense came in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI triple from Amber Spaulding and an RBI single by Jessica Leslie that plated Spaulding. Leslie was 3-for-4 on the evening with the game winning RBI. Junior Christina Enea, Denes and freshman Jamie Fox turned in 1-for-3 performances.

In the second game of the day the Sooners shut down St. Gregory's by a score of 6-0. Sooner hurler Kami Keiter tossed a shut out and stifled a St. Gregory lineup that tallied just four hits. Keiter struck out five St. Gregory batters in route to her second win of the Fall Festival.

The Sooner offense got on the board with two runs in the first, third and fifth innings. Alison Horne went 3-for-4 and did damage with a two RBI single in the first inning. Sophomore Marie Mena went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs as well. Leslie went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Horne not only knocked in two runs but scored two as well.

Freshman Stacia Aleman and Keiter picked up a one RBI each in the bottom of the fifth.

The Sooners close out the fall schedule Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 4 p.m., when they square off with Northern.
