NORMAN, Okla - The National Fastpitch Association announced the USA Today/NFCA All-Time Top 50 poll and ranked the Oklahoma softball program at No. 5. OU is the highest ranked Big 12 team and the only non-West Coast school in the top-5.
The poll was compiled using weekly rankings from the 1995 season to the final poll of 2003. Two teams - Oklahoma and Arizona - have been ranked in every poll since the poll's inception, which spans 112 weeks.
"To see OU in the top five, among teams that have been there since the beginning (of NCAA softball) is a great honor," said OU head coach Patty Gasso. "Additionally, we are proud to represent the Midwest in the top five and proud of what this program has accomplished over the last 10 years. It is a real tribute to the hard work that everyone involved with OU softball has put forth."
Arizona is atop the all-time list with 64,807 points and followed by UCLA (56,623), Washington (50,938), Fresno State (47,556) and Oklahoma (44,738). Only three schools east of the Arizona finished in the top 11, with Michigan (No. 6) and Louisiana State (No. 9) joining OU.
The NFCA accolade come on the heels of OU's fourth consecutive trip to the Women's College World Series in 2003. A number of milestones were reached last season, including the program collecting its 1,000 win and head coach Patty Gasso registering the 600th victory of her career.
