Norman, Okla - The Oklahoma Sooners debuted at No. 8 with the release of
the 2003 USA Today/NFCA softball preseason poll on Thursday. The Sooners should
be comfortable in the eighth slot. OU also started at No. 8 in the 2000 preseason
poll but rocketed to No. 1 en route to winning the national championship that
year.
Oklahoma is the only Big 12 school to have been ranked in the Top 10 in each of
the last four preseason polls released by the NFCA. The Sooners started at No.
7 in 2002, No. 2 in 2001 and No. 8 in 2000. The Sooners were tied for 11th place
in the 1999 preseason poll.
The Sooners were one of four Big 12 schools ranked in the Top 25. Nebraska was
tied for fourth, Texas was No. 12 and Texas A&M was No. 24. Baylor just missed
the Top 25 at No. 27.
Oklahoma will face seven preseason Top 25 teams in 2003. OU is scheduled to battle
No. 10 Cal State-Fullerton and No. 7 LSU in the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus,
Ga. on Feb. 21-23. The Sooners face No. 13 Arizona State twice -- first, in the
Arizona State Tournament in Tempe, Ariz., on Feb. 28-March 2 and again in the
Kia Classic in Fullerton, Calif., on March 13-16.
OU opens Big 12 action at No. 4 Nebraska in Lincoln on March 20, then travels
to Austin to face the No. 12 Texas Longhorns on April 11-12. The Sooners will
tangle with No. 15 Fresno State at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City on April
15 and host No. 24 Texas A&M on April 26-27.
Oklahoma, which began preseason practice on Jan. 9, starts the season at the University
of Florida Tournament on February 7. The Sooners open at home by hosting Long
Beach State, Alabama-Birmingham and Creighton in the OU/Nike Classic on Feb. 14-16.
