OU Softball Picked Third in Big 12 Preseason Poll

NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma was selected to finish third in the preseason Big 12 softball poll released Tuesday by the conference office in Dallas. Nebraska and Texas preceded OU in the poll by a narrow margin.

Since the formation of the Big 12 in 1996, Oklahoma softball has never finished lower than second in the conference standings.

Nebraska (77 points) finished third in the Big 12 last season and was runner-up in the conference tournament last season. The Huskers received five of a possible nine first place votes in the coaches' poll and edged 2002 Big 12 regular season and tournament champion Texas (70 points) in the vote. Coaches were not allowed to vote for her/his own team in the poll. Closely following Texas was Oklahoma (67 points). Both Texas and Oklahoma received two first-place votes and Baylor received one.

Baylor and Texas A&M tied for fourth in the coaches' poll followed by Oklahoma State, Kansas, Iowa State, Missouri, and Texas Tech.

Oklahoma returns 10 letterwinners from the 2002 squad which finished 49-16 overall and second in the Big 12 at 14-2. Oklahoma is the only Big 12 school to advance to the Women's College World Series each of the past three years. The Sooners captured the national title in 2000.

Baylor and Texas Tech kick off the 2003 Big 12 softball season with games scheduled for January 31. Oklahoma opens on the road at the University of Florida Tournament in Gainesville, Fla., on Feb. 7-9. The Sooners host the OU/Nike Classic in their home opener in Norman on Feb. 14-16.

OU opens Big 12 play on March 20 at Nebraska.
