Three OU Softball Standouts Invited To National Camps

NORMAN, Okla. - OU sophomore standout Christina Enea (Woodland Hills, Calif.) is participating in the Women's National Team Camp conducted by USA Softball. The camp runs September 26-29 and is being held at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

As the national governing body of softball in the United States, the Amateur Softball Association/USA Softball is responsible for selecting players & coaches for the Olympic Games, Pan American Games and ISF World Championships. USA Softball will select a core group of athletes to return to the 2002 National Team Camp in June 2003. The players invited to the September camp are a combination of players from the 2002 Open Tryouts, members of the 2002 Women's World Team, 2002 Elite Team and at-large invitees.

USA Softball Women's National Teams have been among the most dominating of any sports team in history. The USA's ability to bring home the gold in World Championships, the Pan American Games and the Olympics is unchallenged, with a total of fourteen. The USA Softball Women's National Team won the first Olympic gold medal in the sport's history during the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA, and defended its gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

The USA Softball Women's National Team, which has won five consecutive World Championships, the past four consecutive Pan Am Games and the past two Olympic gold medals, is the undisputed No. 1 team in the world.

Enea capped off one of the best Sooner freshman campaigns in recent history in which she led the team for the majority of the season in hitting and finished with a Big 12 Conference best 57 RBI and 19 doubles. Her overall stats rounded out with a .354 batting average, eight home runs and 68 runs scored.

She was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America team as a third team utility player selection in May. Her All-American accolade comes on the heels of a first team All-Midwest Region pick and a first team All-Big 12 selection. Enea is the first Oklahoma freshman to garner All-American honors and the 15th all-time selection for the program.

Two additional Sooners, freshmen Nicole Denes (Coppell, Texas) and Kristin Vesely (Phoenix, Ariz.), have been invited to participate in the Junior Women's National Team Camp from October 3-6 at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

USA Softball will select a roster of seventeen players from the camp to represent the USA at the first Pan American Junior Women's Softball Championship December 13-21 in Sonora, Republic of Mexico. The top five teams from this championship will earn a berth into the 2003 ISF Junior Women's World Championship in Nanjing, China. The National Team will train together December 7-12 prior to leaving for Sonora in a destination that as yet to be determined.

The United States captured gold at the 1987 and 1995 ISF Junior Women's World Championships. In 1999, the last Junior Women's World Championship, the USA finished second behind Japan.
