NORMAN, Okla. - Head Coach Patty Gasso and Oklahoma softball released
the 2003 spring schedule on Thursday. Last season, Oklahoma advanced to the Women's
College World Series for the third consecutive year and finished ranked No. 8
overall with a record of 49-16. Over the past three years, OU has amassed a 165-33
record (.833).
In 2003, the Sooners will face four teams that finished in the Top 25 of the final
NFCA poll last season: No. 6 Nebraska, No. 16 Texas, No. 17 Fresno State and No.
21 Texas A&M.
OU opens in Gainesville, Fla. at the University of Florida Tournament on Feb.
7-9 then returns home to host the OU/Nike Classic on Feb. 14-16 in Norman.
For the sixth consecutive year, OU will compete in the prestigious NFCA Lead Off
Classic (Feb. 21-23) in Columbus, Ga. and the Kia Classic (March 13-16) in Fullerton,
Calif.
The Arizona State Tournament on Feb. 28-March 2 in Tempe, Ariz. and the OU/Worth
Invitational on March 7-9 conclude the Sooners' tournament action.
OU travels to Lincoln to battle Big 12 rival Nebraska on March 20 in the conference
opener. The Huskers also advanced to the Women's College World Series last May
and finished No. 6 in the final poll with a 50-14 overall record.
The Sooners take on Texas in Austin on April 12-13. The Longhorns are the defending
Big 12 regular season and conference champions and finished 50-13 last season
and ranked No. 16.
OU takes a break from conference action to play Fresno State and Florida at Hall
of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City on April 15-16. Fresno State finished No. 17
last season with a record of 50-20.
The Sooners host Texas A&M on April 26-27 at the OU Softball Complex to conclude
their Big 12 regular season schedule. The Aggies went 40-18 last year to finish
ranked No. 21.
OU also hosts league foes Missouri (March 26), Baylor (March 29-30) and Iowa State
(April 4-5) in Norman.
Oklahoma will battle in-state rival Oklahoma State in Norman on April 2 and then
travel to Stillwater to face the Cowgirls on April 24. The Sooners travel up the
turnpike to visit Tulsa on April 22 and host the Golden Hurricane at the OU Softball
Complex on April 28 to round out their regular season schedule.
The 2003 Big 12 Conference Tournament is slated for May 1-4 at Hall of Fame Stadium
in Oklahoma City.
