NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma softball player Erin Evans was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District Team as a second team selection as announced by the committee on Thursday. Recently named to the Big 12 Academic All-Conference first team for the third consecutive year, the junior centerfielder captured her first all-district recognition and the Sooners' first since 2000 when Lana Moran went on to be named the Academic All-American of the Year. Evans accomplished better than a 3.2 in her Special Education studies to receive the honor.
On the field this year, Evans is batting .275 on the season with 25 runs scored, 37 RBI and a career-best four home runs. After finishing the Big 12 regular season in second place with a 14-2 record, Evans and her teammates placed third in the conference tournament last weekend.
To receive consideration for the award, the nominee must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. Each nominated athlete must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at their resepctive position.
