OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - After dropping their first game of the Big 12 Softball Tournament to Kansas on Thursday, No. 2 seed Oklahoma handed the seventh-seeded Jayhawks a crushing 10-0 run-rule defeat in five innings Saturday morning to continue their tournament run. Freshman catcher Heather Scaglione (3-for-3), freshman designated player Jessica Leslie (1-for-2) and junior third baseman Leah Gulla (2-for-3) all hit two-run homers to account for six of the team's runs. Junior shortstop Kelli Braitsch continued her hot tournament hitting as she went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI to boost her team-leading tournament average to .625. Oklahoma (44-13) moves on to face top-seeded Texas at 7:30 p.m. tonight, while Kansas (33-25) is eliminated from the tournament.
OU tagged OU starter Kristen Milhoan (6-7) for four early runs in the first three innings and then exploded for six runs in the fourth inning off of reliever Serena Settlemier who shutdown the Sooners two days ago in a 3-1 win over Oklahoma. The Sooners set a team Big 12 tournament history-best with 14 hits and fell a run shy of their tournament runs record of 11. Their home run total also tied that team tournament record.
All six runs in the game-breaking fourth inning were scored before an out was recorded. Leslie began the barrage by parking a two-run homer in left field in the second at bat of the frame to score Keiter who reached base after being hit by a pitch. Senior leftfielder Christy Ring (1-for-3) then hustled for a triple in the following at bat and scored on a back-to-back three bagger by Braitsch. Freshman first baseman Christina Enea (1-for-3) then plated Braitsch with a single before crossing home plate herself on Gulla's homer.
The Sooner offense caught on fire early as they managed to produce one run on four hits in the first inning. After Ring lined out hard to left field to leadoff, Braitsch continued to hit Milhoan hard as she tagged her for a single in the next at bat. The Jayhawks recorded their second out of the inning on a groundout to first base by Enea before Gulla stepped to the plate and drove in Braitsch from second with a single to left for the first run of the game. Two more singles were hit in vain as Scaglione's shot struck Stump on the way to second base to end any further threat.
The Sooners recorded their next three runs after two were away in the third inning. With two outs, Stump singled home Braitsch, who led off the inning with her second hit of the game, and then scored on the front end of Scaglione's two-run shot to left field to break open a 4-0 lead for OU.
Freshman Kami Keiter (12-6) picked up the win after holding KU to three hits and striking out four in her third combined shutout victory of the season. Senior Jennifer Stewart put in an inning of work as she came on to close out the final inning.
