OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Facing elimination in the Big 12 Softball Tournament, second seeded Oklahoma advanced to the third day of competition with a 5-1 win over No. 8 seed Iowa State Friday afternoon at Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium. The 12th-ranked Sooners (43-13) bounced back from an early tournament loss yesterday to the seventh-seeded Kansas Jayhawks and advance to face the loser of the Kansas-Nebraska game tomorrow at 11 a.m. on the stadium's main field. First team All-Big 12 shortstop Kelli Braitsch (2-for-3) sparked the Sooner offense with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, including her eighth home run of the season and two runs scored. The Cyclones (17-22) were eliminated from the tournament with the loss.
Senior starting pitcher Angela Foster improved to 9-1 overall after picking up her second win in as many starts. Foster worked the first four innings and surrendered only one run on five hits while striking out four. Freshman Kami Keiter relieved Foster at the top of the fifth inning and held the Cyclones scoreless the rest of the game for her second save of the season.
After the Cyclones went ahead with a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning, Braitsch tied the score with a solo homer in the bottom of the frame.
Oklahoma put up two more runs in the next inning to take their first lead of the game at 3-1. Freshman Heather Scaglione (1-for-3) scored the first run after collecting a leadoff hit and scoring from third base on a pass ball. With two outs and junior second baseman Tiffany Weight (0-for-2) standing at second base after a fielder's choice, senior leftfielder Christy Ring (1-for-2) singled to plate Weight with the second run.
Ring was again a factor in the final two runs scored for OU in the fifth inning. Ring drew a one-out walk and moved to third base on a single by Braitsch in the next at bat. Both baserunners would score a batter later on a two-RBI single by junior third baseman Leah Gulla (1-for-2) to give the Sooners their decisive margin of victory.
