NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma assistant softball coach Tim Walton has officially left the Sooner program for the head coaching position at Wichita State University. Walton will immediately embark on his first head coaching job after serving the last four years as an assistant under Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso. Walton leaves the program after helping guide the Sooners to one national championship, three straight Women's College World Series appearances and three Big 12 Conference titles.

"You expect to lose good assistant coaches eventually because they become such a hot commodity in the softball world," commented Gasso. "Tim has wanted to take that next step and become a head coach and this provides a great opportunity for him and his family. He will be taking over a program with which he has an opportunity to make it really successful."

"I appreciate his loyalty and the hard work he has put in to this program over the past four years and I wish him the best," continued Gasso.

A native of Cerritos, Calif., Walton was a pitcher for the Sooners' baseball team in 1994 and 1995 and a member of the 1994 national championship squad. After graduating from OU in 1995, Walton played minor league baseball in the Philadelphia Phillies' organization from 1995-97 before returning to the state as an assistant baseball coach at Oral Roberts University from 1997-99.

Although Walton's vacancy has not been filled yet, Gasso said she will fill the position with the best possible individual. An announcement regarding his replacement will come at a later date.
