Arizona 6, Florida State 2 (11 Innings)

May 22, 2002 | Softball

  • Arizona will compete in the Women's College World Series championship game for the second consecutive year and for the 10th time in school history. The Wildcats are 6-3 in the national championship game.

  • Arizona senior pitcher Jennie Finch allowed her first run in this year's WCWS, snapping a 27.2 scoreless inning streak at the event dating back four games to last year (May 25, 2001 vs. Oklahoma). In this year's WCWS, Finch is 3-0 and has allowed just two runs in 26 innings (0.54 ERA) while recording 35 strikeouts.

  • FSU junior outfielder Shundra Colzie's fifth-inning home run off Finch was her first home run in 26 games (dating back to April 13 vs. Georgia Tech). Colzie performed well in the WCWS against two of the nation's top pitchers by getting two base hits against Finch and UCLA's Keira Goerl each.

  • Tomorrow's national championship game between Arizona and California will mark the 16th straight season a Pac-10 team has qualified for the final game. It will also be the ninth time two Pac-10 schools will have faced each other.

  • Jennie Finch registered 17 strikeouts today, the most this year by a Florida State opposing pitcher.

  • Arizona improved its all-time record against the Seminoles to 8-0.

  • Florida State tied the 1990 squad for the school's best WCWS finish as both teams took third place.

  • The Wildcats have won seven straight games in the Women's College World Series.

  • With its two home runs in the 11th inning, Arizona hit its 92nd and 93rd round-trippers of the year, tops in NCAA Division I this season.

  • Wildcats freshman centerfielder Crystal Farley picked up a hit in her first WCWS at bat.
