Arizona and Arizona State played for the 152nd time today (the Wildcats now lead the series, 80-72). This marked the first time ever the Pac-10 rivals have met in the Women's College World Series. Arizona has defeated ASU four out of five tries this year.
ASU sophomore outfielder Kristin Farber extended her hitting streak to 15 games, a career best. She is batting .611 (11-for-18) while going five-for-five in stolen base attempts in postseason play. Her stolen base was her 21st of the season in 22 attempts.
Arizona senior pitcher Jennie Finch, who retired the last 13 Sun Devils she faced today, posted a personal high for wins in a season with her 33rd victory. Finch has also thrown three consecutive shutouts in WCWS play and has not given up a run in 25 consecutive innings in the tournament. All three wins were 1-0 finals.
Arizona catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest was the Wildcats' leading hitter against Arizona State this season entering today (4-for-10). The sophomore went 1-for-4 today and drove in the only run of the game.
Arizona won its sixth consecutive College World Series game and improved to 6-0 in 1-0 games this year. As a team, the Wildcats have not given up a run in 32 consecutive innings at the WCWS. This game snapped the Wildcats' streak of five straight WCWS games with a home run.
ASU senior pitcher Erica Beach lost for the first time this postseason (5-1) but has an earned run average of 0.63 (four earned runs in 44 innings) in those games.
The Wildcats limited Arizona State to season-low one hit.
