Iowa State catcher Katie Ruby hit a solo homer in the bottom of the second inning and that's all the eighth-seeded Cyclones needed to eliminate ninth-seeded Missouri in a Big 12 Softball Tournament play-in game Thursday in Oklahoma City.
Ruby drilled an Ingrid Werner pitch over the left field fence for her third home run of the season.
ISU starter Erica Martinez limited Missouri to two hits and gave up just one walk while striking out four to improve to 10-16 on the year. Werner surrendered five hits and one walk while fanning three Cyclone batters.
This marks the sixth straight year the tournament's No. 8 seed has ousted the No. 9 seed in the play-in round. Iowa State upped its season mark to 19-23 while Missouri dropped to 29-33.
