Game Recap
In a game which showcased the matchup of the Big 12's Player and Pitcher of the Year, top-seeded Texas needed an extra frame to defeat fifth-seeded Texas A&M, 2-1. In the end, it was freshman pitcher Cat Osterman who carried her team to victory by allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out 13 A&M batters. The Longhorns scored a run in the top of the first on a Deeanna Williams two-out RBI single that plated Erin Mahoney. The Aggies rallied for an unearned run in the top of the seventh as Lindsay Wilhemson singled home pinch runner LaToya Rose with one out. A&M quelled a Texas rally in the bottom of the inning but couldn't fend off the Horns in the eighth as Tiffany Anders scored the winning run on a Mahoney grounder to first after UT loaded the bases. Osterman picked up her 32nd win of the year against just seven losses while Wilhelmson got the loss to fall to 11-6. Wilhemson relieved starter Jessica Slataper who gave up three hits and seven walks in 5.2 innings of work.
Texas Head Coach Connie Clark
On the game:
"I thought Cat (Osterman) did a good job of keeping us in the ballgame. We struggled with our concentration and had some errors but we were able to get it done and win."
On focusing for next game:
"I told our girls that we need to take the good things from this game and leave the negative aspects behind. We believe in investing in every day and we wouldn't be getting better if we weren't learning from this and turning it into a positive."
Texas A&M Head Coach Jo Evans
On the game:
"I'm proud of the team. They battled the entire game. I liked our attitude going into the last inning. We honestly believed we could score. Lindsay (Wilhelmson) was superb in finding a way to put the ball in play to drive in the tying run. To do it against against a pitcher of that caliber (Texas starter Cat Osterman) is clutch.
"We did a good job with our pitching and defense until the last inning. Unfortunately, it was enough for us to lose the game."
On starting pitcher Jessica Slataper:
"I thought Jessica did an excellent job working out of jams. She stay focused and pitched well enough to win the game."
