NORMAN, Okla. - An error by the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi leftfielder in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed the winning Oklahoma run to cross home plate as the ninth-ranked Sooners escaped with a 5-4 win over the Islanders in OU's second game in the OU/Worth Invitational on Thursday evening. OU senior hurler Jennifer Stewart (8-2) picked up the win in relief after holding the Islanders scoreless over the final two innings to earn her second win of the day after picking up the win earlier in the day over Wichita State. Oklahoma improved to 19-5 on the season while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi falls to 13-17.
After TAMU-CC grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, OU countered with three runs of their own to take a 3-1 lead. Freshman catcher Christina Enea (2-for-4) doubled home senior leftfielder Christy Ring (2-for-3) and junior rightfielder Jennifer Stump (0-for-3) who had both reached base on walks in previous at bats in the inning. Enea scored from third base two batters later due to an error by the Islander shortstop.
The Islanders drew within a run in the third when a leadoff single turned into a run three batters later on a single by TAMU-CC catcher Eden Goss (3-for-3).
Oklahoma extended its lead to 4-2 in the fourth frame with a single run after sophomore first baseman Katie Overton (0-for-3) reached first base after being hit by a pitch and scored three batters later on a single by Ring. Two innings later, Texas A&M-CC knotted up the game at 4-4 with a two-run homer by Islander designated player Kesty Meitner (2-for-4).
Oklahoma plays a twin bill tomorrow against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Wichita State. The action for the Sooners begins at 3:30 p.m. against the Islanders with the game against the Shockers immediately following at approximately 5:45 p.m.
