FULLERTON, Calif. - Oklahoma senior leftfielder Christy Ring tied the school's all-time mark for stolen bases as the Sooners defeated Utah, 8-0, in six innings in a consolation game of the Kia Klassic Saturday afternoon. Ring (2-for-4) tied the record with a stolen base in the first inning to swipe her 74th career base and tie former Sooner LaKisha Washington (1998-2001) who set the record a year ago. Ring was also a powerful asset for the Sooners at the plate as she reached base in all four plate appearances and scored two runs, while driving in a third. Freshman catcher Christina Enea (1-for-2) and junior centerfielder Erin Evans (3-for-3) both went deep for OU who improved to 25-8 overall. Senior starting pitcher Jennifer Stewart (11-3) worked all six innings and held the Utes (10-26) to five hits, while striking out six and not issuing a walk.
Oklahoma, who posted runs in all six frames, scored its first run before one out was recorded in the bottom of the first inning. Junior shortstop Kelli Braitsch (1-for-4) started it off for the Sooners as she led off with a single, moved to second on an error by the Utes' second baseman, which allowed Ring to reach first safely, and then junior third baseman Leah Gulla (4-for-4) stepped to the plate and singled home Braitsch for the first run of the game. Ring, who had advanced to second on Gulla's single, stole third base before Enea lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Ring for the second run of the frame.
With Oklahoma ahead 2-0, Ring drove in a run in the next inning as junior second baseman Tiffany Weight (2-for-3), who had reached third base after hitting a base hit two batters earlier, came home on a RBI-single by Ring.
The Sooners then scored their next three runs on home runs. Enea crushed a two-run shot to left field in the third inning and Evans led off the fourth frame with a solo shot to right-center field to give OU a 6-0 advantage.
Evans picked up her second RBI with a single to plate pinch runner Katie Overton in the fifth inning and Gulla drove in the eighth and decisive run in the sixth with a single to score Ring, who had tripled to lead off the frame.
Four Sooners posted multi-hit performances in the game led by Gulla who recorded a career high in hits with four.
Oklahoma will remain in California to play Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles at 12 p.m. (PST) on Monday.
