NORMAN, Okla. - The ninth-ranked Oklahoma softball team repeated its Saturday afternoon performance by shutting out Creighton, 8-0, in a run-rule shortened five innings in the OU/Worth Invitational finale on Sunday afternoon. The win completed a six-game tournament sweep for the Sooners, their third such sweep this season. OU starting pitcher Jennifer Stewart (9-2) led the way for the Sooners by holding the Bluejays hittless until the fourth inning and only relinquishing one more hit the remainder of the contest. Stewart struck out five and walked only one as Oklahoma improved to 23-5 and Creighton fell to 6-11.
Oklahoma wasted no time in jumping ahead of Creighton by scoring five runs with two outs in the first inning. Senior leftfielder Christy Ring (1-for-3) started it off by reaching first base on an error by the Bluejays' shortstop. After stealing second, Ring scored on a base hit by freshman designated player Christina Enea (2-for-3). OU manufactured four more runs in the inning on RBI singles by freshman catcher Heather Scaglione (1-for-3), freshman first baseman Kami Keiter (2-for-2) and junior centerfielder Erin Evans (1-for-3).
A double by junior third baseman Leah Gulla (1-for-3) plated junior shortstop Kelli Braitsch (2-for-4) all the way from first base after she led off the second frame with a single.
Keiter scored OU's lone run in the third inning after drawing a walk, moving to second on a single by Braitsch and crossing home plate on a single by Ring to put the Sooners ahead 7-0.
The Sooners scored the decisive run for the run-rule advantage in the top of the fifth inning when junior second baseman Tiffany Weight (1-for-1) led off with a single and moved around the bases before scoring on a groundout to third base by Braitsch.
With Oklahoma looking to close out the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, Creighton mounted a small comeback by placing runners in scoring position. With Bluejays on third and second with one out, Creighton shortstop Cara Van Winkle (0-for-2) hit into a fielder's choice as Oklahoma sophomore third baseman Katie Overton (0-for-0) gunned down the runner attempting to score at home plate. Then, with two outs and the bases loaded two batters later, Stewart struck out CU pinch hitter Nicole Garber (0-for-1) to preserve the run-rule advantage and end the game.
The Sooners head to California this week to participate in the Kia Klassic in Fullerton, Calif. Oklahoma begins tournament play on Thursday against Florida State at 11 a.m. (PST) and competes at 5 p.m. against Cal State Fullerton.
