GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Freshman catcher Christina Enea blasted a two-run homer to record her first collegiate hit as No. 7 Oklahoma exploded for five runs in the third inning en route to an 8-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin in the second game of the UTA Tournament on Friday. The game was called after one out in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Sooners' scored their eighth run to earn the run-rule decision. The Sooners ended their first day of competition with a 2-0 record and starter Angela Foster (1-0) picked up the win for OU as she only gave up one hit in four innings of work.
"I liked how we set the tone of the game by scoring early. That has been one of our missions this season and I thought it really helped put us in control of the game," said OU Head Coach Patty Gasso. "Christina Enea's two-run home run helped open the door up for us offensively and things sort of fell in line after that. I also thought Angela Foster did an excellent job of keeping the hitters off-balance."
The Sooners batted around in the third frame to produce the game-breaking five runs, three of which came after two were out in the inning. Two batters after Enea's (1-for-2) blast, two Lady Jack hurlers combined to load the bases on a single by sophomore first baseman Katie Overton (1-for-3) and five consecutive walks to push the final three runs of the inning across the plate.
OU plated single runs in the first and second innings to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. A two base error by the Lady Jack centerfielder on a misplayed fly ball in the first inning scored junior centerfielder Erin Evans (1-for-1) after she reached second on a walk and a stolen base. Freshman designated player Heather Scaglione (1-for-3) led off the third frame with a single and scored two batters later when senior leftfielder Christy Ring (1-for-3) delivered a two-out double.
Oklahoma concludes pool play tomorrow against Utah at 10 a.m. and Texas-San Antonio at 1 p.m. before beginning bracket competition at 4 p.m.
