COLUMBUS, Ga. - For the second time this season, the fourth-ranked Oklahoma softball team defeated the University of Utah, 8-1, in the Sooners' opening game of the NFCA Leadoff Classic Friday evening in Columbus, Ga. OU scored five runs in the first three innings to take control of the game and cruise to their 12th victory on the year. Freshman Kami Keiter secured the win for the Sooners by tossing three shutout innings of relief to move to 3-0 this season.

The Sooners plated three early runs in the first inning. Oklahoma got the first two batters on base on a single by senior leftfielder Christy Ring (1-for-3), while junior centerfielder Erin Evans (2-for-4) reached base on an error by the Ute pitcher. Ring would eventually score on a base hit by junior rightfielder Jennifer Stump (1-for-4) and freshman designated player Heather Scaglione (1-for-4) doubled home Evans and Stump for the next two scores.

OU again produced a run in the second inning after getting the leadoff batter on base. Junior second baseman Tiffany Weight (2-for-3) hit a single in the Sooners' first at bat, stole second and a single by Evans two batters later brought her home.

Freshman catcher Christina Enea (2-for-4) crushed her third home run of the year in the third inning when she parked a pitch over the center field fence.

After the Sooner bats were silenced in the fourth frame, Oklahoma again spotted three runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Enea singled and pinch runner Kaycee Clark advanced to third on a double by junior third baseman Leah Gulla (1-for-3). Clark scored in the next at bat, a groundout to second by Scaglione, and sophomore Lindsey Abbott, pinch hitting for Gulla, and pinch runner Jessica Leslie (for Katie Overton) crossed home plate on a double by Weight.

The Utes got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second frame when back-to-back doubles scored their first run. After another Utah player reached base, with only one out recorded, on an error by junior shortstop Kelli Braitsch (0-for-4), OU starter Angela Foster stranded both runners with two consecutive strikeouts to end the inning.
