NORMAN, Okla. -
Down 3-1 in the second inning, No. 7 Oklahoma fought back to score 11 runs in the next three innings to down Southwest Missouri State, 12-3, in five innings in the final game of the OU/Nike Classic on Sunday night. In front of a crowd of 757 at the OU Softball Complex, the Sooners hit three home runs, including two in a seven-run third frame, to mount the large lead. Oklahoma improved to 10-0 on the season and finished the tournament with a 5-0 record. Southwest Missouri State fell to 5-5 on the year.
"One thing I can say is that we didn't panic. These girls had no thoughts of us losing this game," commented OU Head Coach Patty Gasso. "We got some great performances from our new kids like Christina Enea and Jessica Leslie. We were hitting the ball hard today and the other thing I liked is that it was a total team effort."
The Bears scored first in the game with a solo home run by SMS centerfielder Christy Serwein (1-for-2) in the top of the first inning and then jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second on a two-run homer by the Bears' second baseman Larissa Shepherd (1-for-2).
OU got consecutive singles out of junior shortstop Kelli Braitsch (2-for-3) and senior leftfielder Christy Ring (2-for-3) to begin the third frame before junior centerfielder Jennifer Stump (1-for-3) sent a shot over the left field fence to plate all three runs. A batter later, freshman Christina Enea (2-for-3) sent a solo shot to the same part of the park. Braitsch and Ring batted again in the inning and drove in the final three runs of the inning.
Freshman designated player Heather Scaglione (2-for-3) hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to give the Sooners the necessary advantage to accomplish the run-rule affair.
After the Bears' scored the three runs off of OU starter Angela Foster (3-0), Foster recovered to hold SMSU scoreless over the next two innings. Foster finished the game giving up only three hits and striking out seven in four innings of work. Freshman Kami Keiter came on to pitch the fifth frame.
Oklahoma plays its next contest at the OU Softball Complex on Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Oklahoma City.
