No. 7 Oklahoma Hangs On To Defeat No. 21 ULL, 5-3

NORMAN, Okla. - No. 7 Oklahoma's softball battle with No. 21 Louisiana-Lafayette went down to the wire as the Sooners hung on to defeat the Lady Cajuns, 5-3, Saturday evening in the OU/Nike Classic at the OU Softball Complex. The Lady Cajuns (4-2) scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull within two runs of the Sooners (8-0) before senior Jennifer Stewart came on in relief and struck out the final two batters to ice the victory.

With Oklahoma looking to close out the game, Louisiana-Lafayette fought back in the top of the seventh. ULL first baseman Summar Lapeyrouse (1-for-3) doubled to begin the inning and, one out later, second baseman Jill Robertson (1-for-3) hit a home run to left off of OU starter Angela Foster to bring the Cajuns within two. Foster was then lifted in favor of Stewart who, after the first batter she faced reached on an error, struck out the final two batters to pick up her first save of the season.

Oklahoma jumped out to an early four-run lead when junior third baseman Leah Gulla (1-for-3) hit a grand slam home run. The Sooners had loaded the bases on a single by senior leftfielder Christy Ring (1-for-2), a walk by junior shortstop Kelli Braitsch (0-for-1) and another walk by freshman catcher Christina Enea (0-for-1).

Jessica Leslie (1-for-1) cushioned the Sooners' lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when the freshman hit a pinch hit home run, her first collegiate hit, to give OU a 5-1 advantage.

Foster gave up six hits and was responsible for the three Cajun runs while striking out six to earn her second win of the season.

Oklahoma will again face back-to-back tournament competition tomorrow. OU faces Northwestern State at 2:30 p.m. and Southwest Missouri State at 4:45 p.m. Both games will be played at the OU Softball Complex.
