NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma's offense was the story of the day as the softball team pounded out double digit hits in a 10-0 shutout of St. Gregory's and a 9-1 win over Southwestern Oklahoma Saturday afternoon. OU recorded 10 hits in the first game against the Lady Cavaliers, while five Sooners turned in multi-hit performances against the Bulldogs en route to a 14 hit team effort in their second game of the informal tournament held at the OU Softball Complex.
"I thought we played real well in our first game and did some really good things," commented Oklahoma Head Coach Patty Gasso. "I wasn't very excited about our performance in the second game. I thought that we made some careless mistakes, so on Monday we're going to work on correcting that in practice."
The Sooners struck quickly in the first contest versus St. Gregory's with two runs in the first inning. Three consecutive base hits by OU, followed by an error by the Lady Cavalier catcher, led to the first run for Oklahoma. Senior third baseman Leah Gulla (0-for-2) then grounded out to the shortstop to plate the second run of the inning.
OU opened up the game in the third inning when the Sooners sent all nine batters to the plate and produced five runs on five hits. The squad then tagged on three more runs in the fifth inning to end the game early by forcing its second run-rule decision in two days. Junior centerfielder Erin Evans was the offensive star in the game for Oklahoma as she went 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Oklahoma scored all of its runs in bunches in the second contest of the day against Southwestern. The Sooners pushed across three runs in the fourth inning on four singles and registered five more hits, while taking advantage of two Bulldog errors, to plate their final six runs in the seventh.
Sophomore Adrianne Ratliff and freshman Kami Keiter picked up the wins on the mound for the Sooners in their first starts of the fall.
Oklahoma will compete in its only other tournament of the fall season Oct. 12-14 in the OU Fall Festival being held at the OU Softball Complex.
