Home Runs Lift Sooner Softball To Two Victories

NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma softball team hammered out five home runs over a two game spread Friday evening as the Sooners defeated Southwestern Oklahoma, 8-0, and USAO, 6-0, in an informal tournament being held at the OU Softball Complex. Freshman designated player Heather Scaglione (2-for-3) launched two homers in her first two at bats of her Oklahoma debut in the first win over Southwestern. Junior centerfielder Erin Evans (2-for-6), sophomore rightfielder/catcher Megan Hube (4-for-5) and freshman designated player Jessica Leslie (1-for-3) accounted for the other three home runs in the second game against USAO.

"I was pleseantly surprised with the way our freshmen hit the ball tonight," said OU Head Coach Patty Gasso. "The other players that we normally depend on weren't at their best tonight, so it was nice to know that we can count on other sources for offense."

"We got into some base running mistakes tonight that we'll have to work on, but overall, I thought we did okay," added Gasso. "I was just not sure what to expect because we just keep practicing against each other in practice."

Leading Southwestern 1-0 in the second inning, Scaglione hit a two-run homer to left field in her first career at bat to give OU a three run advantage. The San Diego, Calif., native then sent another pitch over the left field fence in her next at bat to extend the lead to 5-0. The game ended after five innings when the eight-run lead forced a run rule decision. Senior Jennifer Stewart picked up the win after tossing a two-hit shutout.

In the second game against USAO, Hube began the scoring with a two-run home run followed by a solo shot by Leslie to help OU grab a 3-0 lead in the second frame. Evans matched the feat in the next inning with a solo shot of her own as the Sooners went on to win 6-0. Senior Angela Wedlake pitched five strong innings before being relieved by sophomore Adrianne Ratliff who finished the game.

The two wins opened the Sooners' fall schedule which continues tomorrow with games against St. Gregory's and Southwestern at noon and 2 p.m., respectively, at the OU Softball Complex.
