OKLAHOMA CITY - Fifth-ranked Oklahoma (42-7) continued to roll with a 7-0 win over Texas A&M (31-18) in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament. A crowd of 1,115 fans at Don Porter Hall of Fame Stadium witnessed the Sooners win a school-record 15th game on nine hits and dominate the Aggies through their pitching.
Juniors Jennifer Stewart and Angela Wedlake combined for the shutout where they gave up only three hits and retired the final 12 batters in order. Stewart moved to 30-3 on the year after limiting the Aggies to just three hits in her four innings of work. Wedlake tossed the final three innings and was perfect in relief, retiring all nine batters she faced to pick up her first save of the year.
With two outs in the first, OU put runners on first and second when Lisa Carey reached on a fielder's choice and Ashli Barrett walked. Sophomore Jennifer Stump plated Carey with a hard-hit single up the middle to give OU the 1-0 advantage.
The Aggies loaded the bases in the third inning, but it was the last time they threatened. After left fielder Angie Shelter singled, the Sooners retired the next two batters. Stewart walked Kelly Ferguson and Crystal Martin reached on an error to fill up the diamond. But Stewart got Wilhemson to pop up to Carey at third to get out unscathed.
Oklahoma added three more runs in the third after loading the bases on back-to-back singles from Mandy Fulton and Leah Gulla and a LaKisha Washington walk. Junior Christy Ring reached on an error by the second baseman as Gulla scored and a two-run double to right center from Carey gave OU the 4-0 lead.
Carey singled to left center in the fourth and scored on Barrett's stand-up double to right center. She returned to the plate in the sixth where she led off with a solo homer to deep center field. It was Carey's seventh of the year.
Texas A&M starting pitcher Lindsay Wilhelmson (8-4) lasted just 1 1/3 innings in the losing effort. She gave up four runs (all earned) on five hits. Lindsey Rippee relieved Wilhelmson and gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits in the last 4 2/3 innings.
Carey went 3-for-4 on the day and was just a triple short of hitting for the cycle. She also scored three runs and drove in another three. Gulla was 2-for-3 with one run, while Ring, Barrett, Stump and Fulton each added a hit.
The Sooners will return to the field at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evening. They will play the winner of Thursday's Texas Tech-Baylor game that will take place at 11 a.m.
