No. 5 seed Oklahoma State defeated Texas Tech 2-1 to advance to the championship game of the Big 12 Tournament. Oklahoma State will face No. 2 seed Oklahoma for the tournament title at 3 p.m.
OSU scored first in the top of the fourth when rightfielder Jade Lindley doubled to drive in firstbaseman Stephanie Hodges who walked to lead off the inning. The Cowgirls added a run in the fifth when Hodges singled in leftfielder Amanda Hayes. Texas Tech cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning on singles by Sandy Butler and Rebecca Eimen.
OSU pitcher Lauren Bay (15-11) won the game going five innings and giving up one unearned run. Cowgirl Tiffany Paper went the final two innings to pick up her second save of the season. Red Raider Maggie Ayres went three innnings giving up one run (unearned) and fell to 3-5 on the season. Ayres was relieved by senior Amanda Renfro who picked up her 1,200th career strikeout in the sixth inning.
Texas Tech loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but could not score as Carmen Grindell popped up to second to end the game.
Oklahoma State advances to the championship game of the Big 12 Tournament for the second time. The Cowgirls fell to Missouri in the 1997 finals, 3-1. Oklahoma is 1-1 in title games, winning the inaugural tourney title tilt over Nebraska 1-0 in 1996. The Sooners fell to Nebraska 3-0 in the 1998 title game.
