NORMAN, Okla. - After pitching a pair of shutouts at Texas Tech, Oklahoma left-handed pitcher Jennifer Stewart was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week it was announced by league officials on Tuesday. It was the first time this year a Sooner pitcher has earned this honor. Kansas shortstop Courtney Wright earned Big 12 Player-of-the-Week honors.
"I thought Jennifer was exceptional this weekend at Texas Tech," said head coach Patty Gasso. "It was the best performance we've seen from her in a while. It has fueled our team and now we're hitting behind that effort."
Stewart shut down the Texas Tech batters, tossing 12-consecutive scoreless innings while giving up only one extra-base hit. She held the Red Raiders to a .186 batting average, walking only one and striking out 10 in her two appearances.
In game one, Stewart allowed just four hits--all singles--and had only one runner in scoring position in the 8-0 win. The junior never allowed more than one hit an inning in game two and struck out five of the last eight batters she faced.
The Sooners (34-7, 9-2 Big 12) return to action on Thursday when they face Oklahoma State (20-19, 4-7) in game two of Bedlam. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium.
