LUBBOCK, Texas - Oklahoma extended its current winning streak to seven games with a 5-0 win over Texas Tech on Saturday at Rocky Johnson Field. The win improves the Sooners record to 34-7 overall and 9-2 in the Big 12. The Red Raiders drop to 2-1 and 6-6.
Junior Jennifer Stewart (23-3) started for OU and shut out Tech for the second-consecutive game. The Yukon, Okla., native limited the Red Raiders to just four hits, never allowing more than one per inning, as she struck out five of the last eight batters she faced.
The Sooners reached double-digits hits for the 20th time this year, but left 10 runners stranded on base in the game.
After leaving two runners stranded in each of the first innings, the Sooners broke the scoreless tie in the third. Junior Christy Ring led off with a walk and stole second, but the next two batters were retired. With two outs, sophomore Jennifer Stump had an RBI-single to right for the first run.
OU added another three runs in the fourth on four more hits. Catcher Ashli Barrett beat out a throw to first to get on base and senior Jaime White pinch ran and advanced on a Leah Gulla sacrifice bunt. Once again with two outs, OU scored more runs. A Ring single to right and Andrea Davis' two-RBI single to center gave OU a 4-0 lead.
The Red Raiders threatened in the bottom of the fourth after catcher Shauna Briggs doubled down the left field line and stole third. But Stewart struck out first baseman Carmen Grindell and then walked shortstop Andrea Joachims to put runners on first and third. Stewart then got designated player Britney Stolle to strike out and end the inning untouched.
Sophomore Kelli Braitsch homered for the second time in as many games with a lead-off shot to right-center. It was her sixth of the year and extended her hitting streak to a season-high eight games.
The Sooners will prepare for round two of Bedlam when they travel to Oklahoma State on Thursday. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium in Stillwater. The game will be carried live on the Sooner Sports Network, including channel 9 on the local Cox Cable system. It can also be heard on KREF 1400 AM or by logging onto www.SoonerSports.com.
