LUBBOCK, Texas - After being shut down in the first two innings, the seventh-ranked Oklahoma offense tagged Texas Tech ace Amanda Renfro for two runs on three hits in the third inning to begin its rally past the Red Raiders. The Sooners (33-7, 8-2 Big 12) scored eight unanswered runs and shut out the Red Raiders (2-17, 6-5) in five innings on Friday's game at Rocky Johnson Field.
The move pulls the Sooners further away from the pack and alone at second place in the Big 12 standings behind Nebraska.
OU starter Jennifer Stewart pitched her sixth shutout of the year after allowing just four hits and striking out three. She gave up single hits in the first and second innings and two more in the third, but allowed Tech to get only one runner in scoring position.
Renfro struck out three batters in the first two innings and didn't allow a single hit. But in the third inning, the bottom of the lineup came alive with Ashli Barrett's leadoff single up the middle to get on base. Following a pair of outs, sophomore Kelli Braitsch stepped up and homered to right field to give OU a 2-0 lead.
OU got another three runs on three hits in the fourth inning that started with Andrea Davis' lead off homer that was her first of the year. Sophomore Jennifer Stump walked and Erin Evans singled to right field before Leah Gulla had an RBI single that scored Stump. The third run came when LaKisha Washington layed down a bunt and was safe on a fielding error by third baseman Andrea Joachims that scored Evans.
Renfro (25-14) was replaced in the top of the fifth after giving up five runs on six hits. She struck out five and walked only one in the four complete innings. Junior Maggie Ayres closed out the game and gave up three unearned runs on two hits in the fifth.
The run rally was complete in the fifth thanks to a pair of Tech errors and another three runs. Senior Lisa Carey reached first after getting hit by a pitch and beat the throw to second on Stump's fielder's choice. Shortstop Rebecca Eimen misplayed an Erin Evans hit that allowed her to reach safely and score Carey. Barrett singled up the middle and Washington's single through the left side drove in the final two runs.
The Sooners and Red Raiders wrap up the two-game series with Sunday's noon finale.
