NORMAN, Okla. - Three current players on the Oklahoma softball team were selected to participate in the USA Softball Women's National Team Camp. Seniors Ashli Barrett and Lisa Carey, along with sophomore Kelli Braitsch were among the 51 players invited to compete for spots on the 2001 National Teams.
The camp will be held May 30-June 3 at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. Following the camp, USA Softball will select two 16-player teams to represent the U.S. in international competitions such as the U.S. Cup in Honolulu, the Canada Cup in Vancouver and the Pan Am Qualifier in Maracay, Venequela, during the 2001 season.
A 2000 first-team All-American selection, Barrett has been a four-year starter at catcher and power hitter at Oklahoma. She currently holds the OU career record for home runs with 41, which ranks 18th in NCAA history and is ranked second among OU's career leaders in hits (222), doubles (45) and extra base hits (87).
Carey was named the 2000 Big 12 Player of the Year and is a two-time All-American. Known as a clutch hitter, she is currently averaging .397 and holds school records for hits (263), runs batted in (167), doubles (50) and is second to Barrett in home runs (34).
OU's starting shortstop, Braitsch handles the hot spot with tremendous ease and also provides power and sconsistency at the plate. She leads the team with a .415 batting average and has hit safely in 30 of OU's 39 games this year. Braitsch was named to the 2000 Women's College World Series All-Tournament team.
The 51 players represent 10 states and 15 NCAA Division I colleges. Additional players could be added if any of these players are unable to attend the camp. Only Arizona (nine selections), UCLA (eight), Arizona State (four) and Notre Dame (four) had more players selected than OU.
USA Softball Women's National Teams have been among the most dominating of any sports team in history. The USA's ability to bring home the gold in World Championships, the Pan American Games and the Olympics is unchallenged with a total of 13.
