NORMAN, Okla. - For the second time this year, Oklahoma's Ashli Barrett was named the Big 12 Softball Player of the Week it was announced by league officials Tuesday afternoon. Nebraska's Leigh Ann Walker was named the Pitcher of the Week.
"Ashli's performance has been a spark and at the right time as we begin play in the Big 12," said head coach Patty Gasso. "We needed someone to step up and she did it for us with timely hits and timely RBIs. She's in a great place right now."
Barrett hit 2-for-3 in each of the Sooners' three games last week for a .667 batting average. The catcher collected 15 bases and had a 1.667 slugging percentage over the week. She was also flawless behind the plate, fielding 1.000 with 13 putouts and two assists.
Against Texas A&M, Barrett had two home runs and three RBIs in the 5-1 victory. It was just the 15th time in OU history that a Sooner has hit two round trippers in a game. She extended her season-high hitting streak to four games after another two hits in the 8-0 win against the 20th-ranked Aggies.
Barrett is the first multiple recipient of the weekly award this year. She also earned player-of-the-week honors on Mar. 5 after hitting .500 in the five games of the Hillenbrand Invitational at Arizona. Sophomore Kelli Braitsch also earned the honor on Feb. 13.
The Sooners are scheduled to take on Missouri in a doubleheader on Tuesday evening. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. with the second game beginning at approximately 7 p.m. The games can be heard on KREF 1400 AM or by logging on to www.soonersports.com.
